Removing the drive pulley
Proper procedure to start your Mobylette.

The drive pulley

For whatever reason you may have to switch the pulley to pedal power, all you have to do is turn the mechanism marked

--->V (for pedal power)  V stands for velo or bicycle

--->M (for engine power) M stands for moteur or motor

Put the moped on its stand and manually rotate the mechanism to V to be able to pedal the moped home.

To reengage the engine power you do the opposite and turn the knob to M. You may want to leave the moped on its wheels and gently rock the moped back and forth while turning the knob, it may seem to be very hard and difficult at first but it will slide right into gear after a few tries.

The teeth should be fully engaged with the bracket, failure to do so will result in premature wear of the bracket teeth.

What happens is the bracket will disengage while riding and will also make an awful racket like a machine gun sound, the bracket teeth will wear out very quickly. The one pictured is slightly worn out you can see the bottom tooth is not sitting where it should be.

Every new owner goes thru this little incident and usually are very perplexed as to what the noise is, I call it the “Machine Gun Kelly” rattle. It has left many riders stranded when they could be riding home.
I’d like to point out that if you let the engine run too long while it rattles you will eventually wear out the bracket teeth. You will need a new pulley mechanism or you can monkey the bracket to stay locked. What I mean is, you can weld it in place and it will stay there for good , but no more pedal power. I heard someone mentioned , driving a screw in the back of the bracket thru the tray to keep it in place, I would do these two things as a last resort.
