Installing a condenser under the fuel tank.

Installing the condenser outside the Magneto will save you a lot of head aches and guess work when the unit fails. Replacing it  can be done in minutes, and you can carry a spare with your tool bag. Motobecane installed the condenser on most of the Mobylette inside the Magneto, on the right side of the engine behind the flywheel (sometime in the back of the magneto plate), and it can be a tough job for the novices and beginners. The job requires a couple of necessary tools. A piston stopper or big filter wrench and a 3/8 socket wrench. But there is an easier way, and there it is.

You need a new condenser, for this demonstration I used a  G 126 Borg Warner 6Volts /12Volts car condenser from your local car parts store, and a quick connect female terminal.

Get rid of the prong on the end of the condenser wire and connect it to the quick link.

Locate the kill switch quick link connection under the fuel tank.

Disconnect it. The male end of the quick link is the one you want. You can leave the other side alone , maybe tape it out of the way so it won't ground the electrical system.

Connect your condenser to the male end.

Then secure it on the HT coil nuts and bolts. You may have to make the condenser bracket holes a little bigger to make it fit. It is necessary to have the condenser nicely grounded to the frame. Now your condenser will get plenty of cool air, heat is the major failure to condensers, that's why they fail when the engine gets warm and leave you stranded by the road miles out of town. A 30 year old condenser will also fail from age. Buy fresh ones if you can, not 30 year old NOS (new old stock). I have installed NOS ones on mopeds to have them quit a couple weeks later.

You can leave your old condenser on.  Remove it next time you have to go inside the magneto, your moped will run fine. Or at least disconnect the wire from the points terminal. If your moped does not run then remove the old condenser after installing the new one..

On the moped pictured above I ran the moped with both functional condensers and it ran ok, I leave the new one disconnected as a spare for a quick repair on the road next time I need it. Two second repair.

Allez! roulez.
